I just dug out my copy of the classic Lord of the Rings and am looking forward to a good trivia game tonight.

So if you have the book laying around anywhere, grab it up and let's see who the biggest LOTR geek is!

I know what you mean. The whole ending was totally fucked. Where was the confrontation @ Bag end between Bilbo and Saruman?

Looks like the 2 hobbit movies are going to be hatchet jobs as well. Christopher Lee is confirmed to be reprising his role in them even though Saruman wasn't in it.

The 1st film covers the book and the 2nd is going to cover what happened in the 60 years between Hobbit and 'Rings'

An old friend of mine is going to be in The Hobbit as one of the wizards, he's already been out to New Zealand a few times for pre-production meetings and has seen some of the sets & locations. It should be great fun, even if not all of it exactly reflects the books.

*slightly jealous, in a good way that you know somebody who is going to be in it OMG cool!*

I thought the movies did NOT go into the Legolas/Gimli dynamic nearly enough. I actually laughed out loud reading it a few times :P

I've read those books at least once a year since I was 13, so I've read them...um many times. They did get rid of the scouring of the shire, one of my favorite parts of the trilogy, also the gratuitous concession to political correctness at the river crossing before rivendale made me unhappy. AND NO TOM BOMBADIL...GRRR. When people ask me what I thought of the movies I tell them I thought they were "ok".

I choosed to watch the movies as something else then the books and loved them...
..but I agree on the "ending", I really wanted to see that part.
I remember myself as a kid reading about how they "kicked ass" and I loved it.

Truth be told, they are good movies and I enjoyed watching them

I bet all of us know how badly movies based on books can be fucked up! These weren't, they just omitted some stuff... But if they didn't, the movies would probably be 6h long and they'd make too little money!

As a story, and as movies by themselves, they were rather quite good, and very re-watchable. They were just loosely based on the books to make a good cinematic piece.

I'm still totally looking forward to The Hobbit. On that note, I remember a long time ago checking out an animated adaptation of part of the Lord of the Rings from the public library. Am I the only one who has a faint recollection of this seemingly very incomplete animated movie?

On that note, I need to crack it open again, it's been awhile since I read it (and I've "only" read it twice, a few years ago). I'm currently slowly working on A Stitch In Time by Andrew Robinson, a novel centered around the back-story and future of Garak away from DS9.

The trivia went well thanks for asking! I made the mistake though of using one of my movie guides to get a few of the questions from, and somebody pointed out that I was asking a question wherein there was a possible discrepancy between the movie and book *blush* (for the curious, it had to do with a familial relationship between Galadriel and Arwen). Of course this means I am now going to have to flip through some of my Tolkein works to find the elven family trees to settle it. I'm pretty sure I've seen some family trees in at least one of the books.

I'm probably going to keep the LOTR/Hobbit trivia as a recurring thing, it was fun. Some of the folks who had no idea on the answers still came up with some pretty funny stuff lol Other topics, if you are curious, include Star Trek, general Sci-Fi, science, and food (I'm trying to set up my kitchen in a camera-friendly way so I can see if anybody is interested in learning how to make, say, good salisbury steak or stroganoff from a half-naked chick lol NO NOT DOING NAKED BACON! lol)

Nooo not the animated version - runs from the pc and seeks out a quiet corner.

and you are right on it being incomplete - the studio did the first half of the rings and even though it was a success financially the critics panned it and the studio refused to finance a sequel covering the rest of the book.

I'm not 100% sure but I think I've heard that J.R.R Tolkien himself was involved in the making of he animated movie of LOTR.
I have only seen that as a kid and the movie actually made me read the books...and then LOTR made me read "Bilbo" ("Bilobo - a hobbits adventure" was the title translated to swedish if I remember correctely)

I look forward to see the movie "the hobbit". It feels like it should be easier to make "the hobbit" closer to the book but I guess theywanted to make more money if they make 2 movies out of it and change the story.

About the family trees. I think those are in Silmarillion.
Hmm wonder if that 2nd movie (didn't heard of it before) will be based on some of the other books (like silmarrillion) to try to make a story of the years between movie 1 and LOTR and maybe some other things as well.

I must admit not having read all the books.
