Not what I'd put on my top 100 list. I try to veer away from such lists as they usually make me bark or foam at the mouth, but I can't resist a little bit of foaming for this one..
Jeff Buckley has four spots in the top 100 of all time (nos. 3, 7, 56 and 69), but they deemed Bob Dylan worthy of just the one spot at no. 55? I think somebody doesn't own any Dylan albums to know better (and in which case, what the hell is he doing making this list???).
I was no fan of Nirvana but can see where they could earn a place on the list, but no. 1 of all time?? AND nos. 40 and 74??
Radiohead - THREE times in the top 15? PLUS a fourth song on this god-awful list at no. 28?? Would someone PLEASE tell this asshole to put his iPod on shuffle? You can't make a top 100 list of any sort that includes such a broad spectrum and wiggle a mediocre band into the top 30 four times, yet alone making up 20 percent of the top 15, and expect people to give this any legitimacy...
WHERE is Aerosmith? Or the Police? The Doors? The Eagles? No hip-hop or rap allowed on the hottest of all-time? But it makes your booty shake, really.. watch the videos :P Clearly this station leans a bit more alt-rock which is fine, but if you're going to put in the Beach Boys, you have to give Elvis or Buddy Holly their due with at least a mention (get over the Jeffrey Buckley man-crush and replace one of those with an ode to the King - they clearly went out of their way to mention the Prince of Pop with three slots).. Obviously there was a half-assed (a fifth-assed, let's be honest) effort to pay some respects to pioneers like the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Z epplin (though how each could only score twice on this list while lesser men of lesser talents could find themselves higher on the chart just goes to show the musical density of the horse's arse who put this list together. If they're going to put in art-rock acts like Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse, what about Talking Heads? If Johnny Cash can make the list, why not Buddy Holly? Where's Motown on this? No Commodores or James Brown? No Four Tops? Again maybe a bit too far from the station's playlist library, although Stevie Wonder gets a nod, and at least Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix made the list, as does TV on the Radio, otherwise Michael Jackson accounts for nearly one-half of the non-white acts listed from a stream of music so indebted to its roots in African American Soul and the Blues.
How the hell does Tiny Dancer, of all Elton John songs, make it on this list when more likely candidates for a crossover like Benny & the Jets or Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting remain reserved for the nos. 101-1000 list? Billy Joel should receive honourable mention if we're going to laud a pianist and showcase Tiny Dancer on the same list as "Stinkfist", Metallica and Rage Against the Machine.
Tool and Powderfinger get two slots but Queen, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and the Clash only get one? I demand a recount, or I'm taking to the streets. Tehran is burning! Well, figuratively anyway
I like a number of these songs, more than half, but whoever came up with this list ought to be sacked. If your musical roots were a heavy dose of the 90s and 2000s alt-rock and grunge scene, so be it, but don't throw in a few dozen pop and classic rock songs and claim to have a hottest of all-time list. Stick to what it is and go with a Best Alt-Rock, or Best Grunge, or Best Metal or Britpop or whatever categories a number of these fall into... this list shows an incredible amount of pretty good or mediocre alt-rock songs written into a list that was simply put, outside of their class.
