Leaves

Years ago I worked with a man, an accountant, Mr. Linn. Mr. Linn was a naturalized citizen who, with his wife, immigrated to the United States. Mr. Linn was unfamiliar with the volume of oak, maple, linden, hazel, walnut, locust, sycamore, apple, pear, peach, cherry and all of the other types and subtypes of deciduous tree and shrub life that we have in abundance in this part of the world. Mr. Linn and I carpooled to the offices we worked in; not a long commute each way, perhaps fifteen or twenty minutes morning and evening. Over time we shared some of our lives, our histories, and the general sort of day to day conversation which two people who work together discuss in passing.

One October morning Mr. Linn, riding in my passenger seat, turned his dark black glasses distorted eyes on me and said "I don't understand. So many leaves on ground, blowing, on streets." I arched an eyebrow at him briefly trying not to put us on some yard in the suburban neighborhood we were cutting through to avoid traffic. "Leaves" he pronounced carefully, making quite sure I heard his enunciated 'L'; "Where do leaves go? Spring leaves all gone. Summer new leaves. Leaves fall. Where go?"

I was loath to attempt to describe to Mr. Linn the futile efforts of people to rake, bag, and discard the leaves. "Charles," I finally said "I do not know where the leaves go. It's a wonderful question."

The gazelle moved slowly but surely toward the watering hole...

She was an older animal, more experienced, confident. Her sharp eyes took in the scene. Refreshing, cool water that she needed. In a pool of the river. Steep banks going down. A log floating near shore. Birds circling overhead.

The log was innocent enough. No scales or short stubby legs mimicking wood there. No other animals were around. Except the birds.

Her nostrils flared as she sampled the air. The wind was coming from the water to her face. No suspicious scents sailed on it.

So nature lovers... what happened as she went down the bank and toward the water? Was it truly safe?

Oceans of Time

Rejoined, washed, years upon years
Hesitation, step back startled
Recognition, emotion, your fear
Hand, upon your arm without harm
Spinning, immanent hearts, parted

Water, washes us, cleansed
Spray, waves of memory, rains
Wet, beneath trees, kept warm
Arges printesa, your name
Theme, unexpected, never ends.

Something told her to be very worried, very worried indeed. But nevertheless she proceeded. She was just too thirsty. Too confident in her blinding speed. Too curious at what clever trick, if any, a would-be predator might have in store for her. One she had not yet seen. One she could really enjoy laughing about with her girl friends as they grazed the high plains together afterwards.

She savored the water slowly. Tongue lolling out briefly. Neck raised again after a short drink, loving the cool of it, as she turned her head this way and that, looking for trouble. Her heart pounding. Feeling clever and in the crosshairs so to speak all at the same time.

Then it happend...

It was the birds. The treacherous birds.

They each let out a shriek. Then wheeled and flew fast away to the south.

She turned immediately and thundered for the top of the bank behind her.

But already she could hear and start to smell it. Behind her the smell. Before her the sound.

She lowered head and charged upwards. Hoping the charge would be unexpected. That the cat hurtling toward her would choose the wrong point on the bank to sail over and down.

But alas there would be no grazing on the plain anymore. There was not much margin for error for a counter charge by a hungry, spotted, flash of ravenous fur and teeth.

I'll spare you the horrible details.

And shame on those of you who imagined submarines, dirigibles, tunnels, scuba gear.

Nature's finest predators do not have to cheat.

You poor working stiffs take heart...

Those who suffer under the tyranny of countless bosses...

Those who never get credit for their work...

Those who slave, giving generously to ungrateful wretches of managers...

Spineless, greedy, sawed-off runts from Nature's discard pile...

I... Yes I... will be your defender.

Whereever there is injustice... You will find me...

Whereever a weekend is spoiled... Health is stolen... I will be there...

I am... the scourge of the heartless employer...

I am... the avenger of all abuses...

No longer will he steal what is not his from you...

No longer will you be exploited...

No longer will you have to sit through pointless, mind-k1lling, meetings...

The tide has turned...

History stands ready for our species' next great leap forward...

The day will dawn when...

40 hours means 40 hours, work descriptions don't have asterixes,

Cubicle walls come down and sunlight again lights happy employee faces in spacious offices...

When cynicism can relax its grip safely...

When risk taking again obeys the law of small numbers...

When initiatives are stifled before they are imagined...

When the corporation humbly takes its proper place in the great scheme of life...

When Tiny Tim is covered and able to eat...

When philosophers can safely walk down corridors in our most productive workplaces...

Yes... Yes... I can see it... Coming... now!

Yeah I used to be like you... That is until I got smart.

There I was flat on my back at 30000 feet... when I got the first whines in my threat intercept radar:

"Hi pokeman... Hello bb bigdick27..."

I slid the stick forward... went into my powerdive... In moments I was on the deck flying by wire.

But the enemy had advanced years in technology. I still heard the sounds of the jamming here:

"Talk to me hunglargeNlow... What's the news fuzzyhugbear?"

So I peeled off, before I was painted, returned to base, and had them install the new system. It is still new, untested, but it gives me the edge.

Now I start down on the deck, trusting my neck to the flight computer. When I get to where the pings and hisses first start to sound in my headphones I flip the switch:

"Show bobs bb" my anti-jam blasts out. Then rapidly switches to:

"Hand bra.... Hand bra... Hand bra..." before a HARM can track me. My chat agility switch hops me over the spam morphospace bb.

I took the site down for maybe one whole minute. All they could put out was a "bb. too quiet. talk to me"

One minute is all I need to do my job bb.

Rawhide: Shit! I've got goosebumps.

Perfect Tommy: You always were such a pussy.

The top brass cringed in the bunker. They had never seen anything quite like it.

HB-88: All systems go. Main sequence completed.

A new day is dawning in the Great Struggle. The team would be sure to press the advantage home.

Control: Initiating main engine burn. Final countdown: 10

Control: 9

Control: 8

Control: 7

Ultra powerful engines whine and then blaze out purple fire.

Rawhide: Weirdest looking engine belch I've ever seen.

Perfect Tommy: Quiet. Put on your glasses.

Every pair of eyes on the site was now cloaked in super heavy glacier glasses. Lenses thicker than any specs.

Control: 6

Control: 5

Control: 4

HB-88: We have full main engine burn. All readings nominal.

Tower: Three temperature sensors are malfunctioning. We are shutting them down. TS-108, TS-529, TS+991

President: Damn this is the third launch in as many years. I hope this one takes.

Secretary Smirnoff: I am betting on it Mr President.

Control: 3

Control: 2

HB-88: Releasing parking brake.

Control: 1

Tower: Go go go!

A blazing, metallic bird blasts along the desert floor. Everyone on the ground is cheering. The pilot at the controls is our most decorated test pilot... none other than Buckaroo himself.

Enemies of Good beware. We are coming for you.

But just where was the Evil? Recall: the PooHawks had been roundly thumped. The lectroids liberated. The Heathers had been given a permenent run in their stockings.

So who, where, why?

Hanoi Shan was hidden somewhere in the underworld. Limpid Lizard had escaped it was true. The general upwelling of Evil had been defused and deflated. The trend bucked.

How could we justify new spending when the threat seemed diminished?

Well... the advocates of Good, the responsible protectors of the masses, know that any advantage we obtain has to be grabbed when we are not up to our hips in battle. We cannot expect to achieve new technological heights when our scientists are being k1dnapped or our factories being bombed.

So do not worry too much that the next great threat has not gathered form just yet. Rather, enjoy this brief breath of peace. Prepare for the next test...

From the Book of Ride

It is futile to guard every wall. Your enemy, when attacking, will always find the remotest corner, the most drowsy of your guards.

Instead gather your force. Concentrate it. Let him take some insignificant prize. You will crush him when he has shown his grasping hand.

How many leaders have failed by trying to guard a city when they should have focused on destroying an army? More than there are stars my ch1ldren. The price may be high. But that is war.

In this life we have only limited choices. We can be lords no matter the circumstances. But we can never cheat the War God from his dole.

Some civilizations have known this. Their civilians have nobly accepted their precarious place in this existence. But others have been unworthy of the men that guard them. Have forced departures from the Sure Way.

Make no mistake... every people is tested time and again. It is not the strength of a few but the weight of the many that tells in the most difficult of times...

Joan of Arc

Now the flames they followed Joan of Arc
as she came riding through the dark;
no moon to keep her armour bright,
no man to get her through this very smoky night.
She said, "I'm tired of the war,
I want the kind of work I had before,
a wedding dress or something white
to wear upon my swollen appetite."

"Well, I'm glad to hear you talk this way,
you know I've watched you riding every day
and something in me yearns to win
such a cold and lonesome heroine."

"And who are you?" she sternly spoke
to the one beneath the smoke.

"Why, I'm fire," he replied,
"And I love your solitude, I love your pride."

"Then fire, make your body cold,
I'm going to give you mine to hold,"
and saying this she climbed inside
to be his one, to be his only bride.

And deep into his fiery heart
he took the dust of Joan of Arc,
and high above all these wedding guests
he hung the ash of her lovely wedding dress.

It was deep into his fiery heart
he took the dust of Joan of Arc,
and then she clearly understood
if he was fire, oh she must be wood.

"I saw her wince, I saw her cry,
I saw the glory in her eye.
Myself I long for love and light,
but must it come so cruel, must it be so bright?"

(c) Leonard Cohen 1971 as performed with Jennifer Warnes

In 2012 a massive Bigol army moved relentlessly East. Its objective: the Mountie capitol of Kwarzaryeen. It drove a smaller force, retreating in good order, in front of it. A crack mountie division.

It was clear that the mountie force intended to make a stand in the pass of the last mountain range standing between the Bigols and the mountie capitol. It was, after all, the most defensible spot in all the land. The Bigols had to pass that way to reach their ultimate objective.

AT the western edge of the mountain range, on the road that would lead to the pass, lay the great mountie city of Byang Gar Sho. It held no strategic value. It was merely a large, famous city loyal to the mountie king.

The Bigols knew that they would lose many men in the mountain pass. As they drew near Byang Gar Sho, their scouts informed them that the mountie army had already moved off toward the pass. So they decided to sack the city as a punitive measure for resisting the Bigol Khan and to raise the morale of their troops.

They rode through the western end of the city. Burning. Looting. Pillaging. But there were no people to be found. They continued deeper into the large city. The fires they set spread rapidly and raged behind them.

The streets become narrower. The buildings changed from wood to stone. They lost cohesion and discipline as their blood lust flowed looking for outlet.

Their advance element, an out of control mob really, turned a corner, and ran smack dab into the face of the mountie army. The defenders had only pretended to leave the city. Returning via some underground tunnels cut into the plains.

Instead of finding terrified, helpless civilians the Bigols now had to deal with a well organized, deadly fighting force. The shock of the initial mountie charge dispelled any notion of an easy victory. In fact the situation was quite dire for the Bigols. The streets were narrow and choked with their warriors. Their larger numbers were useless. The fires they had set, quite stupidly it was now obvious to all, were advancing swiftly up their rear. Giving their stragglers a horrific "beautiful death".

They could expect no quarter because they fought with no honor. They bravely, but pointlessly, went to their death, ending the Khan's ambitions for a greater eastern empire.

One Bigol was spared to deliver the head of the general who had made the fateful decision to sack instead of march. The Khan received the head of his general with the accompanying note: "Send more Bigols."
