Most people take breakups in stride. It hurts. But you cry a little, or a lot, if you need to and then move on. You instinctively know that in the great scheme of things love is just a game, it is something we do because we are just more complicated animals but animals just the same.

Why should we care if organism B doesn't feel the same pull as organism A does for organism B? Why should we be surprised if the nature of drives differs from organism to organism?

I mean, look at it from a set theory point of view. Organism D is a powderpuff, set P. Organism E likes powderpuffs so is in set LP. But organism D is also in set LM, likes macho men, which E is not a member of. Even in this I have oversimplified because a more realistic set label would be something like LMFGDDCHR - likes men who don't live with mom who are fit good-looking, nice dressers, devout, clean, honest and rich.

To succeed the couple has to be in the intersection of two correlated mutual sets. Lx and x, and Ly and y. Unless of course x feels like maybe he could be a part of Ly eventually even if he is not now. Always a bad bet. (rule out conditional memberships)

Fortunately the sizes of the sets aren't fixed. But that is about the only simplification that exists.

Now we bring in the time element. People change memberships with time if unconstrained. You may be into LW as a lad but into LY as a man. You may have just had a breakup that makes you have no Lx type memberships at all.

I estimate the probability of finding a good match at 2.12381 x 10-92 % but my friends at the Institute think I am wildly optimistic.

The lesson? This is research fellah there is no lesson!

If...

I would have liked it.

If...

Romeo had shouted: "Show bobs" to Juliet on that balcony...

I would have identified with him.

Instead I remember thinking "ewwwwwwwwwww" for the one and "I am never going to visit Moscow in the winter" for the other.

That's the difference between the y0ung critic and the more sophisticated one.

Composer: mmmhmmm. And my prima donnas?

Agent: Each can do 1/2 a range. You have a bass, a tenor, and a soprano. I can't promise a symphony but I can promise you Hobocken High's marching band. If you finish on time.

Composer: My cup runneth over. Do I have to do my training during this time?

Agent: Yes. You are required to complete ethics, perfect pitch check, and copyright law applicable to musicians.

Composer: Did my upgrade come in on my computer.

Agent: No sorry. There are cutbacks. Only one refresh every 5 years and only if you fill out in triplicate.

Composer: Did the permit come in for my violin?

Agent: Sorry no. It is still not part of the zoning regulations.

Composer: But I can hum right?

Agent: It's a free country.

Composer: Ah well I'd better get to it.

Agent: Yeah! Let's go out to lunch to celebrate.

Composer: Where shall we go?

Agent: Well we have to be back in 45. Don't want to get you in trouble heh heh. So we might be able to just get out of the really dangerous part of town.

Composer: I'm willing to try.

How big is 1/10 to a society?

Is it a lot to be unemployed? Or below the poverty line?

How many men were in Alexander's army? Were they a tenth of the Macedonians? A small percentage that changed the course of history.

What if that percentage were concentrated. In one part of a country. Or a city. How long would it take to cross through from one side to the other?

Hard for a nation poor with numbers to visualize I bet.

No man has suffered like I have...
Here I am...
on Chiron Beta Prime...
there are no robot overlords but I wish there were.
It would be so much easier.

You see it is small, this world.
There is no place to go for peace, for privacy.
You think I'm lonely? Are you mad?
You think I miss Earth for its cities? Its crowds?

I tell you NO! I miss Earth because on it there is always some place you can go to be alone.

Oh but I could have had some luck. Being in this closet, this sardine tin of a world, if I had the right company. A horny beauty, soft and sweet. A good friendly dog. Hell, even a quiet goldfish. But what do I get? What do I get? A fucking shipfull of bleeding optimists!

"Ohhhhh what an iiiiiintersting place? Have you ever seen such an interesting place?" they say.

"We're sure to be rescued soon. And in the meantime we can practice our vowels. a ah ee ohh youuuu.", they babble.

They never, never, never stop talking. They are always finding the silver lining. Full of proverbs. In love with motivational speeches.

To make matters worse they are early risers. So I can never sleep past 5 am without hearing them clattering and shattering as they galumph about. I need my sleep. My complexion! My nerves!

And they love charades. This might be nice to pass the time now and thn. But you don't understand. They can play it for hours. Giggling and chortling. Hour after hour. If I need anything from them I have to act it out. It is driving me insane!

What kind of sentence would I get for murdering them all? Would I be convicted? At least in prison I can get some solitary. Unless... could the judge know? Would he maybe deliberately... No no, there is the Geneva convention after all.

I will just sit patiently here and signal. Hoping for rescue until my sanity runs out. Remember me how I was. Not what I become.
