A town... A bona fide town...

A saloon...

A bright sunny day...

Limpid Lizard sat at table and waited. A frown on his normally placid face.

Now the old man entered as expected. He looked used and abused. Much older than his years. Still powerful. But a bit hunted. Worry etched in his features.

He spoke in his deep, natural (I might add), voice... still smooth after all these years and all these battles: "The delay at the spaceport cost me everything. I didn't ambush him until after he resupplied."

"You still have your life, old friend. Few have survived a battle in the open with a mountie." said Limpid in a surprisingly warm and reassuring voice.

The old man actually smiled. "Yes it is true. And what a story I have for you some day. It took all of my ... creativity... to make it through."

"We'd better go fast. Find a new battlefield. He will be coming for us." said Lizard rising.

"Yes of course." said the old man after swallowing a shot quickly. "I have no interest in making a stand in this place."

Roughly an hour after these two headed toward the spaceport, the mountie rode through. His mount had changed. It bore a Poohawk brand. He moved fast. But not at the frantic pace of a victor right on the heels of a reeling enemy.

He had failed to avenge the many who had fallen at the machinations of the master assassin over the years. But he had uncovered the league of evil's last great surprise and put them to flight. At the cost of only a couple new scars and some dirt in his ears.

The war had clearly reached a turning point.

"Yes mom... Of course mom... I knoooow... I knooooooooowwww..." the impatient voice of the Model in Black echoing in a lightless chamber.

"I don't care hoooow many children Julie has! And yes, a tower is not a ... ranch house... But I tooooooold you. The tower is gone now anyway! Yes. I know. I spent way too much for it. The accursed agent didn't tell me it was ... kind of fundamental to things."

"No... It is probably in another dimension or hidden in all dimensions. I really don't give a rat's goddam hairy ass where the fuck it is but... No I wasn't able to roll my deposit over into another. It was a complete write off. A big, fat, hairy loss. You follow?!"

"Christ wept! And how is some pathetic man supposed to make things better? Are you hearing what I am saying? Do you get what my life is all about? No. Of course not. You and your country club and your loser, whiny, goat-bearded boys that you call men. You and your pound cakes, your apron, your damned schnouser, your annoying as hell miniatures, your pathetic excuse for a bed room - just bunnies, poo bears, and soft, soft things. Well I am nothing like you. I have pretended all these years to have things you want in a daughter. But I have none. I want none. I am making my play. And I am losing. To you get that you mad woman?! Your daughter is getting her ass kicked by a goddammed bunch of weirdos. It looks like I am probably gonna die. And die hard, painfully, broke, discredited. But unlike you mother, I am gonna take a truckload of my enemies to hell with me. You'll see. You don't have the sense to see what a real woman is... I will let you see. And maybe you'll change. Get some backbone. Rise up off your knees and kick life in its balls."

This ended the chat. I think it would be prudent for me to end the narration early and to sneak out before she notices me here...

Ride Rode with quiet purpose through the streets of the largest city of this world, of Kaon. He was just minutes from the spaceport. But in no particular hurry. His next step was still unclear.

In the seedy throng watching him was a man wearing a familiar hat. Showy. Jauntily worn. The one fashion tell of a man who otherwise preferred to blend in, albeit it a fashionable way.

"Why Peter. Will wonders never cease." said the mountie with an alligator smile. "What brings you to this out of the way place?" Then noticing that the man was sporting three new artificial appendages and a load of new scars observed "Why Peter, I can see something has been eating you."

"Most unkind Mr Ride. I was about to congratulate you on making it here alive. To tell you that your survival puts me in a most jovial of moods. But now. Now I will just tell you that I have some useful information for you. And leave it at that."

"Ahhhhhh don't take it so hard my man." said Ride "Our relationship will continue. You will give me the information. And then figure out some way to betray me again. We will part. And when we meet again there will be still less of you to greet."

"You shouldn't talk to me like that." said the informant testily. "I have always treated you with the utmost respect. Whatever I have done to you has been purely for business."

"Then you must pardon me... old 'friend'. You see I am not a businessman. But let's sit down in that cafe over there and make our parlay."

It was a long affair. Much fencing of the minds. In the end, Peter was a bit wealthier and Ride had a clear next step. So it goes in the dealing of the Good with the Odd against the Evil.

Whenever you are struggling through one of life's rough spots... Whenever you think that you may as well lay down and let the tide wash over you... to give in to the lobstrosities... the snow sleep.... Whenever you find yourself in that tailspin... and are in the lulling, soothing palm of spin forces... think! Stop and think! Of how good it is, how very nice life is... during that brief period just after a really big victory. When in one moment you go from despair to owning the battlefield. When the smoke clears and miraculously, incredibly, it is the enemy and not you that is in tatters.

Time slows for a bit. The senses become so sharp. You connect to your friends around you. You see life from the mountain top. It is all so easy. A pleasure. A gift.

Ahhh and to have a long, lazy trip before you. Across inter-stellar distances. With a mind- numbingly beautiful woman serving your every whim. Who is so crazy for you. And you for her.

Her buttons came off one by one. They floated in weightless suspense. Her hair cascaded. Bright sun for now. Soon to become silvery star light.

Tanned bodies melding and gyrating. Air temperature adapting to mood. Creative, deliberate, lovemaking. As a ship smoothly homed in on its next waypoint.

Adventure. Thrills. Really wild times.

But art. Poetry. Creation after such wanton destruction.

Ying and yang. Dichotomy splitting into tetrotomy. Dimensionality ever increasing.

Complexity. Mastering the complexity. Savoring the complexity. Increasing the complexity.

Building. Scheming. Rising triumphantly to the apex of the wildest dreams.

Then suffusing with such warmth. With such nose-twitchingly amazing warmth.

Light... Security...

The rapidly spinning gem that is man. Moving too fast to count facets. Brilliant. Indestructible.

He sees her in every woman... Her image dances perpetually before his eyes... His one... His fountain... His ideal...

Whirling dreams. Feverish sleep caught in the crannies of long love-filled days. A journey that takes away years and unveils mysteries.

What a great service the Model in Black did for Ride by taking him so far away from his next objective. And giving him an experience that created this... time of wonders.

Oh well, life changes, guys change, well I even change, so am shutting up and not breaking the poetry mood (lighting candles back, remove dust from Dudley's cape, disapearing in a very very VERY subtle and magic way to not wake up carefull readers... Shhh I wasn't herrrrreeee...)

Ride does continue to evolve. Life tends to wear out and toughen. His theory of right and wrong, best action, becomes more complex.

It is foolish to become too attached to a mountie. They operate in a universe that has different customs, different rules. They survive by imposing an inhuman discipline. Something the Spartans might understand a little, if considering them wimps in other ways.

They protect the world. Keep it safe. But they are not part of it somehow. In that sense they always lose it seems. Life measures them out pain. Compensates them with moments of euphoria that more sane lives perhaps never see.

If you give them a moment's joy, a moment's peace, then you know they carry you in their hearts. And this is all that can ever be hoped for.

So it was since time began and so it shall ever be.

The mountie's craft, The Golden Tewk, sidled through space. Its drive, patented long ago by the mountie after an arduous legal battle against some beings from the Alderon system, was based on the idea of dimensional "bull-fighting". In other words it worked by a series of infinitessimal boosts off of ripples in the space/time continuum that were pulled toward it as it passed nearby and went through the Dobzhansky Self-Destroying Reaction as a result of their close proximity - an effect of the Really Incredibly Large Force that operated in this region of range to thing. It was to earlier drives what Mozart was to ealier composers and was generally eco-friendly.

As the mountie lounged in his aft, upper deck, Poeish-red bedroom's antechamber, taking a short break between his rather poetically - described (we thought and most sane critics agree) earlier diversions, he was jarred out of ease by the familiar feel of cross dimensional tractor beams gripping onto his ship and pulling it out of plane. He hit the red alert button and made the quick warp to the bridge. But could do little but strain against mutinous controls as his ship plunged into the fetid swamps of the dank world that suddenly loomed before his sensor screens.

It was a hellish descent. Long and noisy with shrieking wind and klaxons (nobody could be bothered to shut them off, in fact they were largely unheard). The heat from the shields and from the futile exertions, made sweat pour and steam rise. It was almost a relief to plunge into the unwelcoming swamps of this freakish world: a world so familiar to all who were semi-conscious during their galactic history lessons:: the dread Planet 10.
