I apologize in advance for starting a whole new thread for this. But I couldn't quite see where to place it. No existing category you see.

I was doing some research, very late at night, and came upon this old fragment. I believe it to be from the 12th century, when the mountie line was struggling through the dark ages. It is a bit of tragic lyrics, in gregorian style, haunting and perhaps a bit heretical.

I believe its author was burned at the stake. But only after his enraged wife, the subject of the chant, had her pound of flesh. We can all cherish our own freedoms more strongly when we consider the disaster that must have befallen our tragic composer.

Teste DoRide cum Sibylla!

Quando wifea mia est venturus,
Cuncta stricte discussurus!

Tuba, voca hera, spargens sonum
Per sepulchral regionum

The Dies Irae is commonly attributed to the authorship of Friar Thomas of Celano, author of the First and Second Life of Saint Francis. It is a hymn of singular awe and piety. It is customarily sung as part of the Requiem Mass, the mass said for the repose of the deceased. It is also can be said in three parts thirds during the canonical hours on days commemorating the dead, in the New Roman Breviary of 1975.

The date of composition is the mid thirteenth century.

The hymn is a meditation on the Last Judgment, when Christ will come again in glory, no longer granting mercy, but as the Just Judge who will separate the just from the wicked, casting the latter into eternal fire, and welcoming the former to eternal bliss. The hymn closes with a supplication for mercy before the coming of that terrible day.

A Literal English Translation of Dudley's latin

Day of wrath, day that
will dissolve the world into burning coals,
as David (sorry Dudley) bore witness with the Sibyl.

I too was struck by the great similarities between these two works. One so inspired and one so base. It is odd that the base seems to precede the inspired.

It was a time of great confusion of course. Life was very bleak. Thomas, during his travels, no doubt spent some time among the mounties. I suspect the memory of the tragic event, still fresh in the minds of this knightly order, so dedicated to tradition and honor of ancestors, must have moved the heart of the impressionable Thomas, at a time when he was just starting to grasp the cosmic implications of the harsh realities of death, betrayl, and early arriving home of too easily angered wives.

It is to the young poet, composer, of course must go the credit of elevating to a higher theme. Finding the Muse within himself to project upon the heavens the dreams of man.

So it seems to me...

heh heh I must confess that I look for any excuse to become more familiar with the Requiem. And who can resist having some fun with latin? Whether for revenge for horrible childhood experiences in the classroom or just because you enjoy the words tripping off your tongue in a slightly new way. But my loyalty and take is strictly Mozartian at its very core. ; )

I have just checked and there is an extremely detailed, unmatched in its completeness, wiki entry for the scary wrestler. A persuasive counter to any that advance the claim that it is "made up stuff"

I will have to ponder the implications of this. For example the reaction it will provoke in the historians and anthropologists of the future.
