If I've ever been able to sense a train wreck coming, it is right now.

The large green mantis grinned...

Its compound eyes gleamed like slime coated diamonds in the morning sun...

Horny. Just itching to mate. And it smelled something... ready.

It inched forward through the mildewed grasses, not caring that their dirty dank color caused him to stand out more than Robin on a London street.

Her thorax rose above him. Slim. Inviting. Empty of the billions of eggs it had leathery capacity to accomodate. Ready for his billions of white, dull, oval eggs.

His sexual proboscis dragged through the dirt as he moved. Already oozing sperm. The thorns on his hind legs picked up grains of sand as he moved forward through his own muddy precum toward that beckoning thorax.

There was no question of position. They knew only one. There was no question of foreplay. Their kind loved ambush.

He exploded in a mad rush of claw and fang onto her back. His proboscis entering her mate hole. His claws grabbing for stabilty. His eyes whirling in their orbs. His beak opening and closing slowly, feverishly. He loved this kind of rodeo. The use of all his muscles for this clinch.

They moved at a piggy-backed run with him pumping into her thorax over and over and over. Great gushes of hot mantis cum filling it up like a water balloon. Her antenna splayed wide. Her body at last heaving down to the earth in surrender. Letting him do his reproductive functions.

Pheromes releasing continually. My bitch they said. Other mantisses retreated far into the recesses of this low lying jungle. The scratch and grind they made was audible to all ears large and small. echoing off man made structures as well as natures softer more flexible.

So much action. Over in a couple of minutes. He supercharged with vigor running off to hunt some food. Her already feeling the changes in her. Knowing it would be a massive clutch of young that would be released upon the dozing garden very soon.

Nature... getting serious...

I was out on the glacier, crunching through some snow, watching out for ice worms, when I remembered with a chill his distant relative: the milk leavage at the bottom of an unwashed glass worm.

Cousin of the leach. This one lurks in such a glass, waiting for someone who is too lazy to clean the glass before taking his next drink of water.

The victim sips and sips. Gradually lowering the level of the water. The milk leach waits.

The victim is so into what he/she is doing that does not notice the coiling leach.

He finally takes the leach into his mouth. Notices immediately the rubbery feel of it. But unfortunately for him mistakingly thinks it is the milk leavage. The worm poops out some white droppings just when the victim spits - reinforcing this notion. And dives down his gullet.

Deep, deep in the victim's intestinal trap. More like a tape worm than a leech really. He grows and grows. Sometimes tripling in size in one meal if the victim is so foolish as to drink a milk shake.

The end is neither quick nor painless. The victim's family will often opt to put him to sleep instead of watching him endure the immense suffering and slow decay...

Oh please clean your glasses children. Don't become another statistic.

* Note regarding milk leach lineage *

The fact that the milk leach poops out white droppings does not mean that it is in any way related, except by most ancient of common ancestors, to birds - one of the few creatures in nature that poops white.

This feature is yet another example of convergent evolution. There are no long series of homologous genes nor shared developmental pathways between these genera.

Also the feature is thought to convey no direct adaptive advantage. Despite being some aid to avoiding premature detection by its hosts.

No this feature is somewhat akin to the gloree concept of the nobility of the 17th and early 18th centuries. A consciously developed and expensively maintained feature by the species itself. Quite simply: white poop is cool to the leach. Whiter poop = better mate. A vicious spiral develops. Eventually resulting in migration from the swamp or rain forest to the milk glass. Needless to say, a very difficult transition. But the rewards proved to be worth the suffering for this hardy offshoot of the familia parisitea, d' familia leacha albini

Ah well, that is enough of this. Go to nature and observe it in her glory yourself young leach hound. Salt, boots, and a winning smile are all you need.

What happens when the entire set of my bosses, over all of my career, are given a 24 hour vacation from Hell and descend upon some street full of beggars, vixens, puppies, sheet music and instruments. And there is also some guy who can yell out the notes for them to play. And dropped wallets, grannies waiting to cross, choir boys bending over to pick up some of them...
