I'm just curious, I've seen the two of these guys in seperate concerts in recent years, and although they can both still rock. I am partial to Roger Waters. For those who don't know, these are the two front men for Pink Floyd. Anyone who has an opinion on this can add to the thread, no right or wrong answers here, I'm just intersted the see the differences in opinion. Thanks guys

Depends on what you like...if you like wordy lyrics and lots of political talk in your songs, Roger is your man. If you like soaring guitar solos and attention more to music than lyrics, Dave is your guy.

wow! good question. But how can you decide? roger waters in sooo fuckin brilliant in the earlier days (not mentioning sid barrett-since he is not topic of discussion). My absolute favorite is pros and cons, I can listen to this album for eternity! David gilmore on the other hand is specacular with the "newer" songs. My favorites being division bells, good one. Animals, is another one of my all time favorites I believe they both worked on that one. Anyways, Pink floyd is one of my allllll time favorites!!! just my :twocents

Division Bell and Animals are both excellent choices, my favorite song on the Animals cd is Sheep. Gilmour's newest one, On an Island...ehhh, it's ok, very mellow, definitely a difference from The Division Bell cd. I guess he's finally starting to slow down and show his age. I agree, like I said, I saw both these guys and both performed songs to a tee the way they sounded on the cd, that's when you know you're watching a great band perform. Thanks for your input Honey!

Syd Barret had some talent but was also a very bizzare person and it wasn't just the LSD.His own band members admit he was a bit off the wall but he was quite a creative force. We all know about syds plunge into darkness but gilmour came in and really pulled the band together and started making songs that made a little bit more sense than in the syd years.

Roger waters was THE creative force behind "Dark side of the moon" one of the best selling albums of all time, but roger was also a pure asshole, often putting down his own band members "Was quoted once as saying nick mason was one of the worst drummers he ever played with" and constantly in the need for total control of all the bands creativity.Rogers ego made him a liability instead of an asset to the band in the end.

Having said all that I don't think you can safely say one was better than the other because they are both equally talented in their own rights.Gilmour took the band on a different path than roger would have and honestly it was a good thing.Roger and David both have done solo stuff neither one really breaking any charts. So basically without the machine that is Pink Floyd neither man can realize their truest potential as musicians as they both shine when the lasers light up the arenas and the first bars of "Shine on you crazy diamond" are played to perfection. :)

Welcome my son, welcome to the machine...

Kind of interesting that this topic came up of all places here on F4F cause I was just watching Pink Floyd - Pulse dvd on my big screen with surround sound and in my opinion David Gilmore definitely is the better performer hands down on this one.... :guitar

uhh, Richard Wright?

As for performers in a show, having seen Roger Waters now twice and David Gilmour once on tour (but far too young to have seen the whole band together), I enjoyed Roger's performance more. Yes, Gilmour's the better skilled with melodies and the endless escapism with his guitar solos, but in later years seemed more pretentious - Roger mellowed with age, circled back to his roots - both times I saw him it felt like Pink Floyd.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell were both great albums and proof that the whole was better than its parts. And while About Face (Gilmour) and Amused to Death (Waters) were decent efforts, most of their attempts are largely undistinguished. It's pretty clear the influence each had on the other, along with Wrights lengthy instrumental compositions - all the more shame that egos (mostly Waters') outgrew the band in the 80s, and grudges (mostly Gilmour's) prevented the four from appearing together again, more with Wright's death last year.

Stratos nailed it--Roger Waters ended up being a legend in his OWN mind, and acquired that level of "self-importance" that newer artists (such as Kurt Cobain), shunned. As gifted as he is, his ego started permeating his later works--complete with writing songs for movies that stole directly from his previous Floyd work. Waters is stuck in a creative rut.

David Gilmour, on the other hand, has always maintained a level of humility that is represented on his more fluid approach to composing and performing. I enjoy his voice more, and his guitar skills are more appealing to me aesthetically.

I will always regard "DSOTM" and "Wish You Were Here" as two of my favorites.

I tried to go see Roger Waters in West Palm Beach a couple of years ago--the cheapest ticket was $1200. Ego and budgets collide!
