Can I call you Al? Was this just a excuse to post that video? Cause we accept that if it was. But you are right, I have just recently had the pleasure of meeting Dub and he's pretty kick ass if i do say so myself!

Yes you can call me al.

I thought the video was more intriguing than the old AC/DC video.

Robyn, may i call you Robyn? The post is what it is. I was offering a place give kudos.

Now that I think of it. Suggs will probably be on my ass for duplicating a former post. No Suggs, I did not check.

Anyway, Salute to you Robyn! Quote

This is for you al!

Heres an architectural wonder not too far from where you live.

Some background on the Jefferson National Expansion Monument, or the Gateway Arch:

It is a memorial structure to Thomas Jeffersons exploration of the US west resulting from the Lousiana Purchase from France. He commissioned Lewis and Clark to explore the Mississippi River to see what he had purchased in hope of finding a passage to the west coast and other treasures. So this arch celebrates this and symbolizes the gateway to the West.

It was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947. It stands 630 feet (190 m) tall, and is 630 feet (190 m) wide at its base, making it the tallest monument in the United States.[3] Construction of the arch started on February 12, 1963 and was completed on October 28, 1965. The monument opened to the public on July 24, 1967.

The St. Louis Gateway Arch is built in the shape of an upside-down catenary curve arch. So is the dome that Brunelleschi designed for the cathedral in Florence, Italy (see CRAZY ABOUT PEARLA POST # xxx). The measurements for a catenary curve arch can be derived using a mathematical formula, but since the times of the pyramids, builders have eye-balled the curve using a hanging chain. That works because a catenary curve is the shape that forms when a chain hangs suspended from either end-point. Arches, suspension bridges, and domes that use this shape are strong enough to support their own weight.

The cross section of this monument is a triangle with the point to the inside - like a blade. A triangle , one of the most stable geometries, plus the catenary curve provides an almost self supporting structure. This is a perfect marriage between engineering, art and architecture. Another engineering feat is the elevator. How do you get an elevator to climb a curve? The answer is a disc shaped elevator that rotates to a vertical position at regular intervals along the curve.

Here's a pic of the observation deck on the top of the arch:

So al, in your own state you have an elegant, architectural wonder, that symbolizes the crossroads of the path from East to West. So in the post that you initiated, I salute you with the type of item I often post in CRAZY ABOUT PEARLA.
