A question for the models. Do you guys usually use a webcam or actual video cameras? A friend is looking to start and is not sure if those webcams are good enough. What ones do you use?

Most use a sony Evi camera range, thats a camera with built in pan and tilt. This is hooked up to a capture card of some sort be it a pci card for desktop computers or a usb version.

Then you get some models opting for a home camcorder, tripod with a motorised pan and tilt head (controlled by remote wired/wireless) and again a pci card if a desktop computer or a usb version capture card.

Usb version capture card that is good is the dazzle dvd recorder and a good pci card is a Osprey card.

Hope this helps you, I see you asked a few times and didn't really get an answer from the performers :winkwink

. Also webcams are not ideal for working on a site like this due to their nature of being designed to work on things like skype, msn and yahoo and their quality is something that is only good for video on skype and such. To get good video on such a site a capture card and a camera will be really needed for the performer to do well.

Also when picking a capture card pci/usb make sure the performer wanting the device knows what operating system she/he is using, The dazzle USB seems to only work on 32bit windows for flirt4free, seems the performer application they use to send video to the site server does not like 64bit operating systems. So make sure the capture hardware is on a 32bit installation of windows and make sure the windows version is supported by the device in 32bit eg. Microsoft Windows 7/vista/xp.

As usual you come to the rescue on camera and computer problems and even as not being a performer I find your posts informative. Thanks :bowdown

However just had a look at the Osprey 210 card on the Viewcast site and from the picture of it on the Buy Now page baffles me how you connect a video camera to it.

To me it looks just like a D-Sub connection and some audio jack input.Before spending $209 dollars am I missing something or just barking up the wrong tree?

It comes with a breakout cable that has video in ends and audio in ends. S-video and composite.

spare cable here for the 210 as you will see the cable i speak off that comes when purchasing the card too.

May I ask another question?
The video and audio from this input card, can it be used in Messenger ,Skype etc when chatting to family and friends etc? Meaning will these applications recognise it as a communication source?
Generally just seem to recognise a USB webcam.
(I cannot use firewire input from my Sony video camera in those programmes and my usb connection from the camera is a bit unrelaiable and anyway Sony in their wisdom have not produced any drivers for USB connection for my camera model in Vista.)

Also to add the osprey 210 is a PCI card and if you don't have a spare PCI slot in the pc there is also a PCI express version the osprey 240e. So need to make sure before buying an osprey card which slot you have that is empty in the pc. PCI express is the new form factor now for cards.

For uk supplier and prices, worth shopping around for osprey cards, can get some good deals where suppliers want to get rid of them, because they find they can't sell them sometimes. The are very good cards I'm looking at getting one with XLR connections on.. not decided which one yet.. Probably will be 240e... rest are very expensive and I won't use most of their features and also I just want the XLR feature because thinking of grabbing one of the Canon Pro range video cameras at some point and they use XLR connections. Just trying to think how to future proof my system really.

Thanks again for that - yes I must check whether it is PCI express or not.

Your reply came as I was editing my previous thanks but that edit seems to have failed.
I was adding a further question as to whether input from these cards is recognised by Messenger, Skype etc as they usually only seem to recognise a USB webcam?
I have a Sony Video cam and was able to use that when chatting on those programs with friends and family by using the Sony USB driver for it but in their wisdom they have not produced a USB driver for my camera model for use in Vista. (additionally my usb output on the cam is a bit unreliable and Firewire is not recognised by those programmes but is fine for Cam2Cam on F4F)
The cam also has Composite and S-Video output so would link into to the Osprey card connections

Yes all software that uses a video/audio source should see the capture card and should be able to use it, be it skype , yahoo, msn etc

Also I have a sony camera here too that has usb drivers that do work but it sucks the image quality using the usb software they provide they limit the video quality and it's an expensive camera too Sony dcr-pc350e. Only way to get its full quality for Skype for example is to use a capture card.

I paid �1200 when that came out its a few years old now thats why thinking of adding a new High Definition camera now and looking at the Canon Pro range now or may consider Sonys pro range too.. Too many to choose from so going to do some reading and checking the latest reviews before deciding. But it needs to have XLR connections because have an editing console here that uses XLR connectors and would like to start using them too.

sony evi d 100!!!! with osprey capture card.

and. ummm....

2 other huge factors .... internet connection... speed... i think its 1-2mbps upload that you need.....
and a decent pc that can handle it.

i use a quad core... its a bit of over kill, but i have never had a problem. ..... my duo core crashed multiple times

My cam is microsoft life hd cam.. Its great. Harley marie and I both have one..Check us out! It has all the goods. Zoom,pan,tilt. and even special features. Like pink wigs, monster faces, and princess tiara (my fav). Sto by and I can show you what I look like with pink hair..haha

I don't see how it can pan/tilt unless you move it with your hands. True pan and tilt cameras have a motor in them and a remote so they can be moved without having to touch them.

Have you got it on some motorized head with remote ? Like the camera seems nice but most performers want a camera with remote pan and tilt , thats why they go the Sony EVI route or buy a tripod with a motorized pan and tilt head. Also does it zoom optically (the lens moves to zoom) or digital zoom (the software for the camera just enlarges an area) ? Digital zoom makes the image grainy, will have to pop by your room and see the zoom..
