Saw the movie last night, its sooooooo good. Awsome movie. If you havnt seen it, rent it. Really everyone should be a doner. If you arnt a doner already please consider doing it, and watching the movie. You really dont know how much you can save someones life and there family. I just wanted to put this out there, everywhere I can because I believe so strongly in being a doner. You never know who could end up on the list. Totally great movie :thumbsup

Hi Kimee!

Thank you for the post. I am signed up in the Bone Marrow Donation Registry as well as an organ donor when I die if my parts are needed.

I can not donate blood because I am considered too small and the last time I had it done I had acute anemia that did not resolve until 6 months after the donation and my doctor said for me to not try to donate again.

However,

A few years ago I matched perfectly on all 8 chromosomes (sp) with a 32 year old man w/acute leukemia. Unfortunately, he died before I had the operation to extract my bone marrow.

A bone marrow donor can not know the identity of the recipient for one year after the transplant. The only thing I was told was the man was 32 years old w/leukemia.

The nurse coordinator did say she could send letters back and forth to one another.

When he died, I felt so bummed out. I wanted so much to save somebody's life.

I think now the donation is a lot less invasive on the donor since stem cell transplantation is being used to some degree.

So thank you for the post. I like your posts all the time. They help us get to know one another a bit better.

Very cool Tiff, that makes me happy! I have horrible lungs and someday I will need a transplant. Im def not looking foward to it. So far my lungs are doing good. But it makes me sad to see the little kids suffer with lung problems at such a young age. I have always felt that I am going to do something in my life to help them, I just dont know what yet. I have a big heart I guess

As with everything it's better to give than receive, but I was sure glad there were blood donors when I needed it :thumbsup

Therefor I used to donate blood on a regular basis but since I started traveling a lot for work I'm considered too big a risk for blood donations

But I have declared that all usable body parts can be used for donation

I started gining blood just after my 18th b/day and give 3 times a year -- so coming close to 50 units donated so far. My name is on the bone marrow register and I have signed forms to donate organs after I am dead. And instead of a funeral or cremation I have in my will a request that my remains are donated to a local research facility ( otherwise known as a Body Farm ) to be used in de-composition research.

There is a body farm near where I live. Patricia Cornwell wrote the book about the Body Farm.

I have bad lungs too Kimee. I'm going to definitely have to see the movie. I am definitely an organ donor, and volunteer at the local blood bank to help transport coolers of blood to the local hospitals. It is a very enriching experience. Glad you and many other people are proud supporters!

Wow so awsome honey. It is so not fun having bad lungs. Im starting to excerise and run now. Trying to do things that really works my lungs and I have noticed a big difference. I just have to keep it up. :thumbsup

I'd love to help, but I'm on the Verbotten list. I've spent too much time in the less enviable parts of the world - spend more than a year of your life in Eastern Europe, Russia, Subsaharan Africa, much of Asia or South America and the Red Cross in North America and Western Europe would rather not have your blood. Regardless how distant you stay from transfusions, needles, sex with prostitutes, sex with monkies, or sex with needle-weilding monkey prostitutes, I'm still an undesirable. So I donate money instead, because no matter where THAT's been, they're still happy to take it, even if my disease-laden ebola-munching plague-laden ethnically-impure blood isn't to their high standards.

Just a little bitter. A bit.

I see the whole organ donation from the other side of the scalpel as it were -- yhe mumber of people that I have to work on that leave organs to bre used for transplants is sadly never enough. I have performed autopsies where the major organs have been removed as delicately as possible for donation purposes.

The 1 organ I wont let be used out of my body is the eyes or any related tissue as i have near sightedness that is slowly getting worse.

Agree saw it a couple of weeks ago and one of the top films so far this year for a good story line.

Will Smith fans will get to see Will in a very different role then his normal action hero roles, he played the leading role really nice. So as the lady said go watch it and have a serious think about organ donation.. Been registered as a organ donor since I was 18 and legally allowed to make this choice.. Only reason I did it was I was in hospital a lot when younger with very bad stomach pains and realised how fragile life is and how a simple situation like stomach pains turned into a living nightmare I was on so many pain killers I felt like I was in a bad dream all time and not actually in the real world anymore.Then realised some people are going threw so much worse.. and should be happy it is not so.

Also if you decide to become an organ donor let your family and partner know, because that is very important too, I remember when telling my mum she flipped, but that was her 1st reaction because i'm her son and she is just being a normal caring mother and does not want anything to happen to me even after something may happen.. But later she realised and agreed was a very important thing to do.. So talk to family and let them know and understand why you made that choice because if the worse did happen and for some reason the hospital didn't know what to do with your organs, your family would know what your wishes were.. In UK we have a NHS register for people to register on if they want to be donors and the hospital always has this record ( Also in UK now from what I understand they make you an automatic donor unless you ask for it to be removed), not sure how it works in the rest of the world.
