Certainly money is the reason for men and women to become webcam models. It is a source of income for them. Some admit they love the interaction and that performing can be exciting for them too but it is a job.
That said, I find the ones who I favorite, the ones I enjoy returning to again and again don't mention the money aspect or very rarely. They don't repeatedly ask for privates or tips in open chat and they do quite well in regards to private shows.
How do you present yourself in open chat? Do you engage in conversation? Do you start conversations? Do you check your phone alot? Do you watch the television or anything that distracts from the room chat? If you do the first two great you are engaging your room. If you do the latter two or anything like them then not great. Afterall it is a job. I can't talk or text all day at work or I wouldn't have a job.
I don't know what your open room persona is like. Maybe you are very personable but if engaging others is not second nature, work at interacting with your room and the private shows should follow. I hope this helps but I don't have firsthand knowledge of your open room to be more specific.
